eSIM vs roaming: which is cheaper when you travel?

For most trips a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than roaming. Carrier roaming passes often cost a fixed fee per day, while an eSIM lets you buy a set amount of data for the whole trip at a single price, with no surprise bills.

Key facts

  • Daily roaming passes add up over long trips
  • eSIM plans are prepaid — no surprise bills
  • Roaming can be included free in some regions (e.g. within the EU for EU plans)
  • An eSIM is data-only; roaming also covers calls and SMS

When an eSIM wins

  • Trips longer than a few days
  • Destinations outside your carrier's included roaming zone
  • Heavy users of maps, video calls or hotspot

When roaming may be fine

  • Your plan already includes free roaming in that country
  • You need to receive many traditional phone calls

Tip: you can keep your home SIM on for calls and texts while using the eSIM for data — just turn off data roaming on your home line.
